Marketing is a set of activities an organisation undertakes to promote the buying or selling of a product or service.
The undergraduate programme in the department leads to an award of BSc Degree in Marketing.
The progamme structure requires a student to complete an average of 180 credit units in a minimum of three or four years.
The department of Marketing as presently constituted, came as one of the pioneer departments of the university, in 2016, precisely, the department is under the faculty of Social and Management Sciences, which is, under the leadership of our visiting Dean, Prof Agbogu, A. The department is made up of three programmes; Economics, Marketing and Banking and Finance. The Department of Economics was started with brilliant staff members including Mr. Onwuka, Izundu .C., Nwanosike, D.U. and others. At this early stage, Elder Onwuka, Izundu .C. was appointed as the pioneer acting HOD of this young department, while Nwanosike Domimic. U., was appointed the Acting Academic students adviser of the department in 2017. Upon NUC approval of marketing programme, the department staff was enlarged to include; Mr. Onwuka, Izundu .C., Nwanosike, D.U., Omeonu, O.M., Uche Robort, Dr Fineboy I. Joseph and others with Prof Uwazie, I. U., as the Head of Department.
To develop into a world class centre of excellence for Marketing, teaching, learning and research based education in Marketing for the purpose of enhancing the growth and development of the Nigerian Products and economy in particular and the world at large
The general philosophy is the belief that training in this Marketing discipline will develop the mind, impart both theoretical and practical knowledge on the individual student, develop self-confidence, help to be innovative and self-reliant in the fields of marketing. The philosophy of the department of Marketing is to employ the utilization of highly trained, qualified and motivated academics and technology to equip students with relevant and adequate knowledge and skills for decision making in marketing of goods and services. The graduate of Marketing programme should be able to design and develop effective marketing strategies for goods and services based on changing societal needs and are professionally qualified to practice the profession.
The broad objective of the programme is to produce graduates who are able to solve the problems of the society through the efficiency marketing and distributions of available goods and services to the final consumers with the application of Marketing theory and analysis. The specific objectives are;
1. To produce graduates who should be able to design and develop effective marketing strategies for goods and services based on changing societal needs.
2. To produce graduates who should be professionally qualified to practice the Marketing profession.
3. To produce competent and skilled marketers who will provide a general Competencies and skills in the marketing world.
4. To produce graduates who will provide the general behavioural attitudes and ethics to marketing of products and services.
5. To produce marketers who possess the required technical capacities and shill to function effectively in a globalized technological driven economic environment.
6. To develop in student the ability and capability to make effective contributions practically and theoretically at all levels of marketing planning, policy implementations in our environment.
7. To develop and improve student’s appreciation and understanding of the social problems at various shapes of Nigerian societal development.
8. To develop students skills towards data analysis and synthesis, and application of the techniques to solving societal problem.
9. To develop students’ intellect required for successful pursuance of graduate studies in any one of the many specialized fields of Marketing and management disciplines.
10. To equip the students with skills for creativity and self-reliance.
11. Make an obviously outstanding contribution in the production of the manpower needed to propel Nigeria’s development.
12. To provide the training of marketer who will be in the forefront of analysing, explaining and where appropriate offering solutions to today’s world-free markets versus government intervention.
13. To establish appropriate linkages and relationship with other national and international organizations and institutions that are engaged in education and research in marketing and allied disciplined.
